The Betty Boards were not actually put in circulation by Betty herself but by a group of Deadhead tape traders.
Betty had a storage locker in the 70's and for some reason the storage bill was not maintained and it's contents were auctioned off.
A group of traders pooled their funds and perchased the contents and you can figure it out from there.

I would say it's not 'what's a betty board' but "Who is Betty":

Betty Cantor (now Betty Cantor-Jackson) was one of the Grateful Dead sound engineers in the earlier years, and a LOT of Grateful Dead tapes (pre-internet) originated as reel-to-reel tapes, recorded, archived, and gently 'leaked' into the community by Betty.

I'd venture to guess that half of the people who first heard the Dead on tape (rather than in concert or on an album) in the seventies was listening to a Betty Board... sometimes after many tape>tape generations. A low-generation Betty Board was considered a gem in those days.

These days, a 'real' gem from the Betty Cantor era would be a 'Betty Board Master tape digital clone with no (or very few) intervening generation(s).

Please correct any errors I may have introduced with this explanation... I am not an expert deadhead.
[edit]:
See the link in the post below, apparently many of the Betty Boards have been transferred and treed to the community in low gen digital format. YAY!
